Acting police chief returns suspended cops to duty

Post: 7 suspended Pr. Geo.'s cops back
        By Matt Zapotosky
        Posted at 2:40 PM ET, 12/ 9/2010

"Seven suspended Prince George's County police officers were returned to full duty Wednesday night ..."

A week ago today, I asked "Why Fire Police Chief Roberto Hylton Now?"  Expressing a fear that a change might make matter worse, I asked:

So why fire Chief Hylton now, without a superior candidate ready to take over?

           1. The two most logical explanations seem to be:Mr, Baker wants to make a big show of doing something, never mind if it makes matters worse, or
           2. Mr. Baker has decided to come down on the side of the police union and crooks and brutes in the department and get rid of the chief before he gets rid of more of the bad apples.

It is beginning to appear that my fears have been realized.  Rushern Baker replaced Chief Hylton with Mark Magaw.

Acting Chief Magaw was a direct supervisor responsible for the notorious no-knock dog-killing raid on the home of Berwyn Heights Mayor Cheye Calvo and was the police official who later gave reporters misinformation about the nature of the warrant for that raid.

Now Acting Chief Magaw has returned to duty at least seven of the police officers suspended by Chief Hylton for misconduct.  Magaw's appointment and actions don't give me much confidence in either him or in Baker's judgment in selecting him.
