March 3 fight at High Point School; 1 injury, 4 arrests

The Real Prince Georges blog has a new report today, with an embedded YouTube video, about a March 3 fight at High Point High School.  The blog posting has a number of comments from High Point students. It is accompanied by a statement from the president of the student government association. 

The only mainstream news report of the event that I have been find is a short March 3 report on wusa9.com, "Food Fight Leads To Arrests At High Point" by Meta Pettus that said one student was hospitalized and four people were arrested.

I have repeatedly said and introduced legislation urging more parent, family and community accountability for high suspensions, high absenteeism and out-of-school learning.  See my thoughts and specific proposals on the topic at:  www.restorerespect.org

I have been meeting with stakeholders to plan for a campaign to Restore Respect at School.  Education is a shared responsibility!

Comment: Where does county exec candidate Gerron Levi stand on school violence?

A Bowie High School student was savagely beaten in the school a few days ago.  The attacker has been in trouble in the past, but has been allowed to remain in school.  A June 15 news report says:

Sources tell ABC 7 News the boy who attacked the victim, a 10th grader, has been in trouble before and he and another sutdent face expulsion.

But the head of the Parent Teacher Student Organization told us penalties for fighting were lightened this year and troublemakers, even violent kids, are allowed to stay in school.

Bowie High School PTSO President Mary Nusser told us, "There's this effort to decrease the number of suspensions and decrease the number of expulsions...and it's a phony number because all they do is revolve these kids around."

Nusser says it's a real problem trying to expel the bullies. She says bullies' parents hire lawyers and then the school board overturns it. She says before you know it, the attackers are right back in school looking for their next target.

The PTSO seems very concerned that violent and disruptive students are allowed to remain in school and endanger other students.

Gerron Levi, candidate for Couty Executive, appears to support the policy of keeping violent and disruptive students in school.  Later the same day as the news report quoted above, the Levi campaign sent out a message calling for fewer school suspensions: [Full text of message]

As County Executive, I will lead a public education campaign to reduce high school suspensions in public schools. High school suspensions are eroding classroom learning time, undermining student achievement and driving the best teachers and education talent from the classroom. I will lead the campaign with education leaders and community members across the region and we together will reduce suspensions and make the leap ahead! So, if Ms. Levi plans to reduce suspensions, what does she propose, if anything, to protect the victims--the other, innocent students who are in school to learn, not prey upon their classmates?  Whose side is she on?

School Security Chief Resigns

The chief of security for Prince George's County public schools, whose management and reporting of disciplinary incidents and crime are under investigation, has resigned, citing personal and family reasons, the superintendent said yesterday.

Russell P. Tedesco stepped down Friday, Superintendent John E. Deasy said. Members of the Board of Education said last month that they are investigating whether the security department has been accurately reporting security data and that they are examining a situation in which Tedesco worked in the same department as his wife.

According to a report by the Maryland State Department of Education, Prince George's led Maryland's 24 jurisdictions in suspensions during the 2005-06 school year, having issued more than 22,000.

But a comparison of suspensions with incidents reported by the security office shows discrepancies in the reporting of school crime. The school system suspended 158 students for arson, fire and explosives violations in the 2005-06 school year, and the security office filed 13 such reports. The system suspended 148 students for sex offenses; the security office filed 20 such reports. The system suspended 492 students for having guns, knives and other weapons at school; the security office filed 311 such reports.

Violence at Forestville High School

Forestville academy takes steps to slow violence; Two students taken to hospital, eight arrested after Oct. 4 fight.

Students at Forestville Military Academy are worried about the continuation of what they say was a gang fight at the school on Oct. 4.

After the fight, two students were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Of the eight students arrested for the incident, seven were younger than 18.

John White, spokesman for Prince George’s County Schools, said 13 students were involved in the fight, including three who were previously suspended and should not have been in the building.

White said he was unaware of any previous outbreaks of violence at Forestville.

Tenth-grader Stephanie Mendez, 15, did tell her mother about the fights at the school and stayed home the next day because she was fearful of returning to the school.

‘‘Some students were very frightened because of this,” Mendez said. ‘‘Half the student body left [early on Oct. 4].”

Mendez worries about the safety of her younger brothers when they reach high school because of gang violence. To remedy the problems Mendez would like to see more parents involved in the PTSA.

PTSA members did not return calls by press time.
