Proposed school cellphone ban (reply to message by Rick Tyler)

The proposed policy bans a lot more than cellphones (by students not teachers) in the classrooms.  As written, and taken literally, it appears to ban such things as making calls or taking pictures during sporting events, in parking lots, or on school buses, and prohibits sharing or posting pictures of school buildings or any school activities.

The full text of the policy is in a pdf file on the PGCPS website. I have posted an html version.

[pgpubliced] The Post ask - Should cellphones be banned in schools?

This has been a hot topic on some of the county email group sites, but I am not sure everyone who may be interested is aware.

See or participate in unscientific poll below, or just send your views to the PGCPS Board. They are scheduled to vote during their next meeting. Their contact information is at: http://www1.pgcps.org/board/

  1. This school board establishing a uniform electronic devices is a good thing. Most HS already have pre-existing cell phone usage limitations established by Principals. It works out just fine.

    BUT...Students ARE permitted to use cell phones only during the following times:

    1. Before school hours on school property;
    2. After school hours on school property;
    3. At after-school or athletic activities, only with the permission of the coach, instructor, program director or administrator.
