Prince George's a Tough Sell for Duncan

(Updated 19 Feb 2006)
  • Pr. George's A Tough Sell For Duncan; Backers, Donations Lag in Key County .
  • . . . Few top elected officials who represent Prince George's have signed on to the Duncan team. The biggest name is U.S. Rep. Albert R. Wynn (D-Md.). [Jack] Johnson, a Democrat seeking his second term as county executive, has yet to offer an endorsement.

Duncan picked up about 24 endorsements, largely from local elected officials, during an event in Seat Pleasant yesterday. . . .

One member of the Prince George's Senate delegation has publicly backed Duncan: Sen. Gwendolyn T. Britt (D), who is considered a potential running mate. A few members of the House delegation, including the county chairman, Del. Carolyn J.B. Howard (D), are vocal supporters.

Duncan has corralled support from some well-established, longtime county residents, including Howard W. Stone Jr. (Mitchellville), vice chairman of the school board, and former council member M.H. Jim Estepp. County Sheriff Michael Jackson (D) is also onboard, as is the county firefighters union.

Still, Sen. Gloria G. Lawlah (D-Prince George's) said she is puzzled that Duncan's campaign has not picked up more momentum. . . . "From what I can observe, he's done a good job," Lawlah said of Duncan. She has not endorsed a candidate in the Democratic race for governor.
    [. . .]
    Del. Joanne C. Benson (D-Prince George's) said, O'Malley's selection of Brown does "put the sting in Doug's campaign." . . . Del. Melony G. Griffith (D-Prince George's), who is supporting Duncan . . .
