PG Council Smokescreen

The Prince George's County Council won't, or can't do anything effective to protect us from violence--from increasing murders; from being the car-theft capital of Maryalnd; or from armed carjackers.

But, to justify their jobs and salaries, they apparently think they must protects us from something.

So, playing at being nannies, they want to ban smoking.

Maybe reducing smoking is a good idea, but their proposed ban looks more like a smokescreen to divert our attention away from the county's continuing failure to protects us from violence.  Maybe it is time to start looking for candidates who would spend their time increasing the size of the police force and providing some oversight to the failing county public safety bureaucracy, rather than ones who putz around with trivial nanny bills aimed at harassing citizens and businesses.

Pr. George's Crime, Prices Send Residents to Charles

The July 21, 2005, Post has an interesting article by Ann E. Marimow on the migration out of Prince George's to Charles County.

The examples she cites seem to be the type of stable, young families that should be the future of the kind of county we want. Instead, they are being driven away by crime, and rising housing prices.

One factor the reporter does not bring up is how the anti-development forces in the county are driving our responsible, productive young people away.
