Home invasions in Prince George's County are more than double what they were at this time last year. Sadly, the number of times residents encountered thieves in their homes began showing a surge as early as March.

But Police Chief Roberto Hylton waited to alert the public.

"You never want to alarm the community unnecessarily," he told The Gazette, adding that he planned to inform the public when the county releases its mid-year crime report this month.

A delay in such critical information is startling.

There were 86 residential robberies as of last week, compared to 36 at the same time last year.
