Officer Fires at Vehicle During Traffic Stop.
Post, 3 Sep 2008 (Davis & Kravitz).
A Prince George's County police officer fired at the driver of a sport-utility vehicle who accelerated toward him early Monday during a traffic stop in District Heights, police said yesterday.
In a second incident, police said an off-duty officer exchanged gunshots in Beltsville with a man who was peering into parked vehicles. No one was hit in the incident, which occurred in the 11300 block of Cherry Hill Road.
In the first incident, Cpl. James Bridgeman, spotted a man with a gun getting into the SUV in the 7900 block of Central Avenue, police spokesman Henry Tippett said. When Bridgeman tried to stop the vehicle, the driver -- it was not clear if he was the man with the gun -- sped toward him, Tippett said. "The officer, fearing for his safety, discharged his firearm," he said.
No one was hit and after a short chase Tippett said, police arrested five people in the SUV and found a handgun they said was thrown from the vehicle.
