Off-duty county officer in Beltsville shootout; Police looking for potentially two suspects.
Gazette, 4 Sep 2008 (Schuman).
An off-duty Prince George's County police officer exchanged gunshots with a man outside a Beltsville apartment complex on Tuesday night, according to police.
Cpl. Fred Walford from the District 1 station was working as a security guard at an apartment complex on the 11300 block of Cherry Hill Road in Beltsville, when he spotted a man in the parking lot looking through car windows, said county police spokesman Henry Tippett.
"When he approached the suspect, the suspect produced a handgun and fired shots at the officer," Tippett said. "The officer returned fire with his department issued gun."
Tippett did not say how close the officer and man were standing to each other at the time the shots were fired.
Tippett said Walford was not injured and the man was last seen getting into the passenger side of a dark older model Chevy Caprice. Tippett said there could be two suspects, but have yet to determine the role of the Caprice's driver.
