FOP no confidence vote looms for High

With an election year coming up, Prince George's County Executive Jack Johnson is keeping his distance from growing tensions between the county police union and Chief Melvin High.

Johnson spokesman James Keary said the vote should not affect relations between the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 89 and Johnson. The county executive has agreed to a 'generous' contract and put forward funding to replace aging police vehicles, he said. 'He has provided all the resources necessary for the police officers to protect this county.'

Keary pointed to declining numbers of arrests per year by officers since 1999 as evidence that rank-and-file police officers have little room to complain.
