Slurpee Suspect Gets 15-Year Sentence
Teen One Of Three Charged

POSTED: 4:09 pm EDT September 30, 2005
UPDATED: 4:12 pm EDT September 30, 2005

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. -- One of the suspects in what's become known as the Slurpee killing case received a 15-year prison sentence Friday.

James White, 17, . . .

A Prince George's County judge suspended an additional 15 years for White on a second-degree felony murder charge. A third young suspect is still awaiting trial.

Commentary: A couple of questions come to mind:

1. Since White has been convicted and sentenced, why would the media refer to him as just a "suspect"?

2. What is the name of the pro-criminal judge who suspended half the sentence. Why is the media covering up for him?

Is Prince George's County prepared for a total evacuation?

(Posted September 7, 2005)
(Followup November 17, 2005)
The following is a message I sent to selected county officials. It has not been answered. It probably did not reach the offices responsible for an evacuation because:
  1. The county's Office of Emergency Management does not appear to have an e-mail address posted on the county's website.

  2. The e-mail address posted for the county's Office of Homeland Security does not work; messages to it are returned as undeliverable.

The copy of the message addressed to the county's customer service e-mail has gone unanswered, as has a note to one of the county's press contacts.

I can only conclude that, like the people of New Orleans, in the event of a major disaster, we're all on our own and can expect little, if any, help from our county government.

After giving some thought to the evacuation fiasco in New Orleans, I went and looked to see what plan Prince George's County has for evacuating school children, the elderly and infirm, and people without automobiles.

I could not find such a plan on your website.

The emergency plan you do have, which is not easy to find, and requires software that not all citiznes may have or be able to download and install in an emergency, does not address the issue.

Nor does it provide any guidance on where shelters might be found for those who cannot evacuate.

Is there a plan for a total evacuation? If so, where? If not, just what, if anything, would the county government do in a disaster on the scale of the New Orleans one?

Five murders two days; Press and broadcast media generally indifferent

As of this posting (7:05 am, September 3, 2005), only the Post has bothered to post an online report of most of these murders, and the Post has only identified one of the five victims. There is a press release for that one murder of the five on the Police Department's website, but not for any of the others. None of the five murders appear to have been reported on the websites of the Examiner, Gazette, Times, WTOP, or any of the local television stations.

In my opinion, Prince George's County is not at all well served by these "news" services.

Five Fatally Shot in Two Days in Pr. George's

Saturday, September 3, 2005; Page B03

Five people were fatally shot in Prince George's County in the last two days -- four of them within a few hours yesterday. Four of the killings occurred during daylight hours, and two were near police headquarters.

The most recent shooting occurred about 10 p.m. last night in the 1500 block of Ray Road in the Hyattsville area. No information was available about the victim.

About five hours earlier, two men were killed within about 10 minutes. One was shot at 5 p.m. in the 1700 block of Kenilworth Avenue, near the District line, and the other about 5:10 p.m. in the 1800 block of Ray Leonard Road.

About 3:15 p.m., a man was killed in the 1500 block of Village Green Drive. That address and the Ray Leonard Road address are within a mile of county police headquarters in Palmer Park.

On Thursday, Charmaine L. Edwards, 21, of the 200 block of I Street SW, was found fatally shot in a car on Keystone Manor Drive in the Morningside area.

In addition, police said they were investigating the death of a man found about 7 p.m. yesterday in a creek in Northwest Branch Stream Valley Park in the Hyattsvile area. An autopsy was planned to determine the cause of death, authorities said.
